ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential): ORP is a measure of a substance’s ability to either gain or lose electrons in redox (oxidation-reduction) reactions. It is expressed in millivolts (mV).

  • Positive ORP: Indicates an oxidizing environment, meaning the substance has a greater tendency to accept electrons. Substances with a high positive ORP are often associated with oxidizing properties, which can contribute to oxidative stress in biological systems.
  • Negative ORP: Indicates a reducing environment, meaning the substance has a greater tendency to donate electrons. A negative ORP is often associated with antioxidant properties, as it can help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress.

Importance of ORP:

  • ORP is commonly used in water treatment, aquaculture, and health and wellness industries to assess the water’s potential to act as an oxidant or reductant.
  • In the context of health, water with a low (negative) ORP is considered to have antioxidant effects, potentially offering protective benefits against oxidative damage.
